Sulphur is the quiet keystone of the industrial economy. Almost all of it is recovered as a by-product of sour gas processing and refining rather than mined for its own sake, which means supply is set by someone else's production decisions — and demand comes from phosphate fertilizer, sulphuric acid, metals leaching and, increasingly, battery-materials plants that cannot easily substitute away from it. That combination has made 2026 an unusually punishing year for buyers. Argus reports that QatarEnergy Marketing held its August Qatar Sulphur Price at US$890 per tonne FOB Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, unchanged from July, while freight of roughly US$140–155 per tonne for a 30,000–35,000 tonne parcel to Chinese ports implies a delivered cost near US$1,030–1,045 per tonne CFR before insurance premiums. Vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been muted since conflict resumed, with virtually no sulphur cargoes confirmed sailing since 18 July. Earlier in the year values climbed from around US$525 per tonne FOB Middle East in February to all-time highs near US$815–820 per tonne in May, and S&P Global reports that fertilizer producers have curtailed runs as margins compressed. When a commodity moves like that, a loose specification is no longer a small problem: every tonne rejected on arrival is being replaced at a record price.
Step 1 — Choose the physical form your plant can actually handle
Sulphur is traded in several physical forms, and the choice determines your handling equipment, your dust exposure, your shipping rules and your price. It is the first decision, not a packaging detail.

The practical split is between formed sulphur and crushed lump. The IMSBC Code treats sulphur that has been through a forming process — granules, pellets, pastilles or flakes — as a Group C cargo, while crushed lump and coarse-grained sulphur sits in Group B and is classed under the IMDG Code as UN 1350, Class 4.1, because of its fire and dust-explosion risk. That is why most large buyers pay up for granular: it is not only easier to convey and melt, it is easier to ship.
Step 2 — Write the specification in numbers, with test methods attached
Bright-yellow recovered sulphur looks identical across origins. The differences that matter — moisture, ash, acidity and trace metals — are only visible on a certificate, so the contract has to name limits and the methods used to prove them.

Two drafting points repay the effort. First, state whether purity is quoted dry or as-received — with a 0.5 per cent moisture allowance the same cargo can be described two ways. Second, cite the standard: ISO 3425, for instance, covers determination of ash and residue for industrial sulphur containing at least 98 per cent elemental sulphur by mass, and national standards such as IS 6655 are still referenced in some tenders. Independent quality assurance is only as good as the method it is asked to apply.
Step 3 — Treat carriage as part of the purchase, not an afterthought
- Confirm hold preparation and lime washing. Wet sulphur is aggressively corrosive to steel. Standard practice is a lime wash barrier between cargo and hull steelwork, with holds clean, dry and free of loose rust scale and paint flakes before loading. Put it in the shipping instructions in writing.
- Control dust at every transfer point. Sulphur dust ignites readily and can explode. Loading, conveying and discharge need dust suppression and disciplined ignition-source control — an issue at your receiving terminal as much as at the load port.
- Plan for self-heating. Bulk sulphur is liable to spontaneous heating, so ventilation, temperature monitoring and stowage must follow the IMSBC Code schedule for the group your cargo falls into.
- Match the classification to the vessel and the route. Group B / UN 1350 lump cargo brings documentation and segregation requirements that formed sulphur does not. Confirm the owner accepts them before fixing, and build the route and discharge plan with your trade logistics team rather than after the fixture.
Step 4 — Inspect at the load port, verify again on arrival
Sulphur disputes are almost always about moisture, contamination or weight, and all three are settled by evidence gathered before the vessel sails. Appoint an independent inspector to sample and test at loading against the contract specification, to witness draft survey or belt-weigher figures for quantity, and to report on the physical condition of the cargo — dust, lumping, discolouration and any foreign material. Require a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis naming the producing plant, not just the trader, and insist on traceability between the CoA, the stowage plan and the bill of lading. On arrival, re-check moisture and purity before material enters production stock; at prices above US$1,000 per tonne CFR, the cost of a confirmation test is trivial against the value at risk. Step 5 — Structure the contract for a volatile, supply-driven market
Sulphur pricing is unusually reference-driven: Gulf producers publish monthly or quarterly contract prices, and much of the traded market settles at a differential to them. In a year when the benchmark has moved from the mid-US$500s to near US$900 per tonne, the mechanics of your contract matter as much as the number agreed on the day. Decide explicitly whether you are buying at a fixed price, at a published producer price, or at a floating index differential, and whether freight and war-risk insurance sit with you or the seller — the gap between FOB and CFR has widened sharply as Hormuz routing has become uncertain. Where possible, diversify origin rather than relying on a single Gulf loading port, and keep alternative supply pre-qualified so a spec-approved substitute is available before you need it.
